What educators are saying

I am at an IB school and American Revolution is one of our social studies units, this is an incredible resource to use alongside/ supplement material to have it be more engaging.

Description

Get ready to take a journey of math adventures back in time to the American Revolution with this inquiry based math project. It offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of measure and scale, fractions, ratio tables and word problems with the four operations as they plan military strategies and solve problems for the Colonial and British armies. Text is included with data that the children will have to identify in order to solve the problems.
They will plan the journey across the Atlantic ocean with measure and scale, they will be required to calculate the amount of food and water rations for the British soldiers. Research will be necessary as the children have to know location of countries , continents and oceans, vote on perspectives of the Intolerable Acts, calculate elapsed time of the battles and major events. It culminates with a presentation of their group plans and strategies to help General Washington plan his crossing of the Delaware river.
Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder., with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs.
I prefer to have the children work on the pages individually before they compare their designs and work together as a small group to collaboratively create the maps, their group plan of the Retreat to Victory and of the Crossing of the Delaware River. Lots of opportunities for communication skills.

With UK & USA spelling, this inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for an addition to a Revolutionary unit of inquiry or all year round.
