Description
Students love this engaging activity with real world applications for area and perimeter! They work with the rooms on the floor plan of apartment to calculate areas and perimeters.
In the project, students calculate the areas and perimeters of rooms in an apartment, including composite irregular polygons. Follow up questions push students to think about applications of area and perimeter.
In the download, you will receive:
- 2 versions of an apartment floor plan
- Worksheet for calculations and questions
- Answer key
- Creative extension activity
2 versions of the floor plan allow you to differentiate or to choose the one most appropriate for your class. One version includes a slanted wall for upper grades. The extension activity instructs students in creating their own floor plans to meet certain requirements.
What grade level is this for? The two versions of the floor plan make this activity appropriate for a broad range of grades. The basic floor plan could be used as a challenge in late elementary school. In middle school, students often need to review area and perimeter. The floor plan with the slanted line makes use of the Pythagorean Theorem in calculating perimeter. I have even used this activity with struggling high school students who need to review area and perimeter of compound shapes.
