What educators are saying
Description
I developed this resource for my own emergency sub plans. It fits well with both Spanish and Social Studies. Students will watch a 48 minute video that chronicles two different sets of children and the lengths they go to get to school, while they fill out a worksheet about the video. Overall, the whole lesson will last 70-90 minutes. The video is in English, but as a Spanish teacher I have found it very engaging for students. In fact, my own school aged children chose to watch the video and found it both eye opening and fascinating.
These plans can be used a sub plan, which is immediately available for upload to any online platform that is compatible with Google Classroom. I have separated the different worksheets so teachers only need to upload one and not sift through a bunch of information to find what they are looking for. It is simple and straight forward and includes an answer key. You can chose to have a paper copy or Google document and make it independent or group work. So easy, that any sub that does not speak Spanish can implement it.
Likewise, the plans can be used for a break in your normal routine and a day that gives you a chance to engage students in serious discussions about different ways of living, culture and social and economic structures of other places.
Finally, it comes with higher order thinking as students compare and contrast their own journey to school. It naturally makes students think and compare. My son said unprovoked, "Wow! I don't think I am going to complain about biking to school in the cold anymore."
I developed these plans with the most easily implementable way. I wanted to develop a plan that covered both my 90 minute class and two of my hour long classes. I was not disappointed and more importantly, neither were my students.
