Description

Keep your students engaged as they practice identifying contrasting points of view in a short story! Your students will read FIVE short passages and identify the two differing perspectives presented in the story.

I begin this lesson by reminding my students that the word "perspective" includes the Latin root -spect. We review the meaning of the Latin root (to see). We discuss how different people can "see" things differently. I tell them that today, we will be doing an activity where we highlight how two characters within a story SEE things differently.

  • Worksheets- To begin, students complete a set of THREE worksheets. As students read each short story, they must consider the contrasting perspectives presented within each passage. Below each passage, students generate a sentence that explains the two differing perspectives.

If you want, you can stop right there! Or, you may choose to move on and have your students use their worksheet answers to assemble the follow-up activity!

  • Craftivity- Next, the students color and cut out the sunglasses, title box, and stories, and then they glue them onto a sheet of construction paper. When they glue the sunglasses on the paper, they will create flaps. They will transfer their worksheet answers to the display by writing beneath the flaps. The finished products make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display!

  • Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

This project was developed to address Common Core standards RI 5.6 and RL 5.6. The authors of the standards use the term "points of view". Therefore, I also spend time comparing "perspectives" and "points of view", and differentiating between the other type of "point of view" we sometimes identify (first person, second person, etc.).
