What educators are saying

My kids absolutely love these little "plays"! They like to take turns playing all the parts and it really improves their fluency without them even realizing that they're working! Thank you for a great resource!
Used these in reading groups and the students were completely engaged and would beg to keep working on them.

Products in this Bundle (5)

    Bonus

Black and White material only (one pdf) / Smart Board docs (one for each script)

    Description

Five engaging and entertaining Reader's Theater scripts featuring a variety of story lines. Students love practicing and performing these! The average performance time for each reader's theater script is 5 minutes. There are enough roles for your entire class! Reading level: third grade. Suitable for third graders, strong readers in second grade, and fluency practice for early fourth.

You will find everything you need for each reader's theater script in this bundle, including:

    • the script: pdf and Easel activity. You can annotate or highlight the Easel Slides because there is an editable layer.
    • character name tags and titles for covers (color options and black and white)
    • a simple student Glossary for each script (students like reading and discussing the words together)

Reader's Theater is great for developing reading fluency and vocabulary, but it is also an excellent way to build camaraderie in the classroom.

Each script has a fair distribution of lines. Unless I've indicated a part as a minor role, you can be guaranteed that each part will have a decent number of lines for each of your students. (Engagement comes from both the quality of the script, and the opportunity for each student to participate as a member of the group.)

All of the materials in this download come in black and white. Should you have access to a color printer, I've included some pages with color. In the bonus section I've included a pdf with all the black and white pages in one doc, so it's easy to print all of the scripts and associated materials at once. I've also included a combo of color and white pages if you wanted to project these onto a screen (e.g. Smart Board) for your students.

    THE SCRIPTS INCLUDED ARE:

MOUSE ON THE MOON (7 PARTS) - Space enthusiast, Little Mouse, sneaks onto a spaceship and becomes an unlikely space hero. He single-handedly saves the life of a headstrong guinea pig, earning the admiration of astronauts Sue and Pete, as well as the entire world watching on TV. (This script includes fun references to the moon landing!)

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS AND FRIENDS (6 PARTS + 1 minor role) - The Big Bad Wolf is long gone and it's time for the Three Little Pigs to get on with life. They embark on some serious renovations, but can they find room in their hearts and in their new home for a grumpy, desperately lonely Troll? (Special appearance by Little Red Riding hood)

BLAST OFF (5 PARTS + 1 minor role) Three curious children unintentionally hijack their neighbor's shiny flying machine. They fly halfway across the world to Antarctica, where they rescue an injured penguin. (An animal protection theme and also great for learning about the continents)

CLAMS AND STARS (6 PARTS) Life is ho-hum for Clams (a clam) and Stars (a starfish). It's the same old, same old, day in and day out, until one day when an octopus and a hammerhead shark whisk them away for an adventure of a lifetime. (For Finding Nemo fans)

THE VEGGIE THIEF (4 PARTS) The Community Garden becomes a crime scene when Skunk's vegetables disappear. Her steadfast friend, Rabbit, consoles her and serves up some tasty dishes to boot, while Skunk tries to figure out whodunnit.

You are welcome to download The Veggie Thief for FREE as a sample of my work.

    A Bit About Me

I am a part time writer. I especially enjoy writing for children. In addition to writing scripts and plays for my students, I have written books for the Scholastic Education Literacy series: Literacy Place for the Early Years, including a 3rd grade big book, pattern books, and an early chapter book.

I also enjoy creating teaching resources that teach children how to write and, more importantly, foster a love of writing. I am a strong believer in using writing models, scaffolding, and providing writing challenges for those who need it.

Thank you for reading this. I hope you get a chance to use this set of scripts with your students. Please check out my other teaching resources, and follow me for more to come!
