TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been fortunate to teach as a classroom teacher and as a teacher librarian in grades one to seven. In my teaching practice, I have loved creating and using resources that foster self expression and literacy. I'm a big believer in the value of reader's theater, classroom drama activities and creative writing. Outside of teaching I have written 8 books for the Scholastic series "Literacy Place for the Early Years," including the big book, "Pirate Lee." I'm also passionate about filmmaking and have made two short films.

MY TEACHING STYLE

It's all about providing targeted instruction so that the students feel they have something to contribute and the tools to do so. When you demystify the creative process and give students an opportunity to develop their skills, it's amazing what they can do!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have taught grades K - 7, both in the classroom and as a teacher-librarian. I've enjoyed giving workshops on writing to colleagues in my school district. Over the past few years, I've taken numerous courses/workshops that interest me: writing for children, screenwriting, filmmaking-camera techniques, film production, stop motion animation, etc. Currently, I've cut my teaching back to casual/short term positions which has given me the flexibility to create teaching resources, learn the craft of writing/directing films, and attend film festivals. I love teaching filmmaking to kids and find you can tie it to almost anything in the curriculum. The students come alive, and I always learn a thing or two from them!
