Description

The Chicano Movement and Civil Rights

This lesson was designed to be a 1 day assignment, or it can be broken up and added to lessons throughout the year. I love this lesson because it helps students become acquainted the roots of the Chicano Movement Farmers Rights Movement. Please check out the 3 day lesson on the History of the Chicano Movement if you would like more materials. This lesson is included in that bundle!

This lesson is so rewarding and the benefits of it include getting students:

  • In the mindset to think critically
  • Engage with one another
  • Question
  • Empathy Development
  • Exposure to diverse perspectives

This is a lesson that works for me and I wanted to share it with others and frankly save Social Studies teachers hours of their life! Please read over the following slides for some tips and tricks I have learned along the way.  I hope you enjoy this lesson as much as I have!

--------------------

Directions

  • Start with the warm-up to get the students ready to think critically, I like to encourage class discussions. Get a copy HERE of the student warm-up doc free on TPT!

  • This is a 1 day lesson.

  • It is important with topics such as this to establish a safe space with your students and encourage them to share their unique perspectives.

  • Students will work individually but share their ideas pairs throughout the lesson. Class discussions are encouraged throughout.

  • I have designed my lessons to be copied and modified to your liking. *Some slides need to be deleted from student copy of slides if you use google classroom. Those slides are marked in the speaker notes.
