What educators are saying

This resource has a great way to assess student learning on "an as you go" method. The timing and breaks for discussion was fantastic!
This was a great resource to turn out for a quick film study for my grade 8 students. We ended our melodrama unit with The Princess Bride and I used it as an introduction to some narrative writing!

★★ Check out the full preview! ★★

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 - Comprehension Questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions will also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 30 questions requiring full sentence answers
  • 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers

PART 2 - Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences.
  • Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 - This includes four separate creativity tasks for the students to complete:

  1. The masked man climbed the cliff of insanity and encountered three challenges. Students need to delve into the mind of each of the three challengers (Inigo, Fezzik and Vizzini), and write down their plans of strategy against the masked man.
  2. The sign outlining the dangers and consequences for entering the fire swamp has disappeared. Students need to design a new one in line with what was in the movie. (lightning sand, the fires and the Rodents Of Unusual Size)
  3. Students are to write a diary entry for either; Westley while he is on the ship of the Dread Pirate Roberts, or for Buttercup during her time that she is engaged to marry Prince Humperdink.
  4. Student needs to complete Miracle Max’s recipe for “a mostly dead patient”. They need to add ingredients, equipment and directions on how to make it.

Adapted from the novel by William Goldman, this movie is a fairy tale story-within-a-story and is about a beautiful young woman (Princess Buttercup) and her one true love (Westley). Westley has to rescue his love from Prince Humperdink.

How can movies help students learn English?

Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
