I have been teaching 8th grade math for ten years. I have been our department head for eight years. Due to ideas and policies I have implemented in our department, we have gone from a 66% passing rate in 2006 to 88% passing in 2012. The achievement gap has also closed from a 31 point gap in 2006 to a seven point gap in 2012. With the rigorous STAAR test, we just had 90% pass the 8th grade math test!
I teach to every kid in the room regardless of the "sub pop". When I look at my students, I only see willing kids ready to learn. I do the best I can to reach the different learning styles. I follow the same daily agenda every day, so my class is consistent. I incorporate music in the classroom, and I love to have the kids up and teaching other kids. I think technology is wonderful, and I am working on getting more student driven activities in my classroom. I have a powerpoint for every day, but I constantly am updating and changing to meet the needs of my current students.
