I have been a classroom teacher in rural upstate NY for over 20 years. The bulk of my career (over 15 years) has been in fourth grade. I have been a part of a two-person team and a three-person team in which we share students. My responsibilities on the team have included a focus on reading comprehension, phonics, and social studies. Prior to my time in fourth grade, I spent a handful of years in pre-k and kindergarten.
I love to engage both sides of the brain. Interactive notebooks are a favorite of mine; they give every student a chance to excel in their own way. Digital fun and collaborative learning are common approaches in my classroom.
My shining moment was when a parent sent me an email during the summer. Her family had visited the 9/11 Memorial and her son sought out the Survivor Tree. He remembered everything about it; even though the lesson was nearly a year prior to their visit. She attached a picture of him proudly standing next to the Tree. Her email reminded me that what we do matters and our teaching can have an impact long after the lesson has been taught.
