I have worked in education for the past 15 years. I've taught in both urban public schools as well as urban charter. I am currently working in an international school. I have taught Social Studies in grades 6-8 as well as English in grades 6-10. I have also worked as a professional development facilitator for new teachers, a middle school academic dean, and as a model teacher and instructional coach. I am certified in grades 4-8 (all subjects), 8-12 English Language Arts and Reading, Talented and Gifted, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, Pre-AP English I and II, and AP Lang and AP Lit. I have created a course for 11th and 12th graders entitled Literature, Justice, and Law which explores crime(s) in literature as well as the application of justice in literature. Currently I am teaching LJL and English 9.
My classroom is very structured. It runs on a variety of routines that begin day one. Many of these routines revolve around our Writing Workshop as well as how scholars actively read during class. I use a lot of partner reading and small group work, discussion based techniques, and Kagan strategies. Scholars read short stories, poetry, and novels as the core texts in my class. My class time is chunked into instructional cycles so that I do a direct teach at maximum for ten-twelve minutes at a time, the scholars practice, and then we do another level of teaching, and practice. Most classes end with a short writing output or demonstration of learning.
