TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 30+ years at both primary and secondary levels. My lightbulb moment came in 2017 when I first experienced Comprehension-based Communicative Language Teaching as a student and I was immediately hooked. In 2021 I was involved in an action research project focussed on promoting greater student engagement through the fostering of intrinsic motivation. I have presented regularly at the JLTAV teacher conferences, as well as the 2022 National Symposium for Japanese Language Education, MLTAQ conference and the JTCC Online conference. With a strong passion for both student wellbeing and languages, I constantly seek to deepen my understanding of the language acquisition process. My teaching career began as a primary school classroom teacher in Victoria before moving to Broome, WA, to spend two years working with our indigenous community, then four years living, working and studying in Japan. I began my Japanese teaching career in 1997 and have taught primary through to Year 12. In 2021 I was involved in an action research project focusing on promoting greater student engagement through the fostering of intrinsic motivation. I am a strong advocate for the power of extensive reading to drive language acquisition.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching style is student centered teaching through compelling, comprehensible input. My ‘ikigai’ is to create easy to read literature so that beginning language learners can experience success and have access to a range of compelling and comprehensible books. I started JapanEasyReads in 2023.
