I have taught English in Virginia for several years, concentrating on 8th and 11th grades (in both of which students take statewide reading and writing standardized tests). I have recently added theater to my repertoire.
I believe in cultivating students' enthusiasm for learning while teaching necessary skills. I strive to make the my classroom relate as closely as possible to the real world by exposing them to what Kelly Gallagher calls "imaginative rehearsals". By exposing them to literature, writing assignments, and other learning experiences that expand their worldview, my goal is to help my students become the best readers, writers, and critical thinkers they can be, so they can excel in an increasingly competitive world.
