I have taught elementary students for the past 25 years. I enjoyed teaching Kindergarten for 10 years, first grade for 2 years, 3rd grade for a year, and second grade for 12 years. Last year, I taught a 2/3 combination class. My heart is in teaching 2nd graders. My teaching experience has led me around the country: Texas, California, and Wisconsin.
My teaching style continues to evolve and change along with the times. The implementation of Common Core Standards has me once again making changes and trying to find a happy place. I am still very traditional and old school, I think. I love teaching from my carpet area, whole group, using big books and chants. Anytime I can use songs to teach a concept, I jump at the opportunity! My students are working with partners more and in small groups with the implementation of Common Core. I love to use centers as a way of reinforcing standards. I use direct instruction when teaching new concepts. I incorporate many projects into my program. I want my students to enjoy being 2nd graders, giving them as many chances to paint, cut, glue, and create as possible.
