TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught in a self-contained special education classroom for 12 years. I teach remedial math and reading, as well as life skills and functional communication. I have taught students with a variety of disabilities, ranging from Down Syndrome to Williams Syndrome to Asperger's. Most of my students this year have moderate intellectual disabilities with speech/language and occupational therapy needs.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My students love hands-on activities. In my class, we do science experiments, cut and paste activities, and lessons that tie in functional communication. Since communication is the basis of education, I believe it is important for students to be able to communicate effectively. I use a lot of picture clues with my students.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a huge advocate for students with special needs! I have worked with them in Special Olympics outside of school. The joy that they bring to people's lives is something that should be experienced by all! I like to encourage people to get to know someone with a disability.
