Since 1997, I have been teaching English and journalism in both middle and high schools, working in New York, Idaho, Florida and online. As you can imagine from that disparate list of states, I have taught in a wide variety of schools: inner city, rural, suburban. I enjoy rising to the challenge of creating lesson plans that will benefit all of my students, and my students routinely outscore their peers on our county issued final exams. I hope you'll find these resources and ideas helpful as you work with your own students!
I would describe myself as a “big idea” person, and my students often bear the brunt of that. I love to take my students deep into a subject. When we studied the Harlem Renaissance, I helped create a month-long interdisciplinary project that involved close to 10 teachers and culminated in community outreach and a trip to the state legislature. When we learned about the Holocaust, my classes created beautiful artistic representations of the children who died, which became part of a permanent museum display. One year, we painted a mural on the classroom ceiling. And the end of the year Literary Bake-off is a pretty fabulous day to be around my classroom.
