I have taught elementary and middle school language arts, reading, math, and gifted education in public and private schools. I have also worked in middle schools as an academic coach and assistant principal. My most recent experiences include tutoring dyslexic students one-on-one using the Orton-Gillingam approach and teaching gifted education in the primary grades. I currently work as a private tutor and public school educator. The Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading is my passion. I have loved seeing the incredible progress my students make, growing from struggling readers to successful ones. I definitely believe in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Orton-Gillingham is specifically intended to be used as remediation for students who struggle to read and write due to dyslexia, although it is an extremely effective method of reading instruction for any age and any ability student. My products and materials come from authentic Orton-Gillingham lessons that I developed during my supervised internship for Associate-level certification with the Orton-Gillingham Academy (www.ortonacademy.org). I have taught these lessons and perfected them. The full lessons include materials for each of the 10 essential components that are needed for implementation: review word cards, new word cards, word cards for syllabication and learned words, controlled reading, and even the phonics drill cards. Many TpT sellers claim to have Orton-Gillingham lesson plans or materials. My lessons are one of only a few products sold by a certified O-G Associate. I know that my lesson plans are authentic and complete, adhering exactly to the strict structure of Orton-Gillingham instruction. There is nothing cutesy in my lessons, and the pages are saturated with helpful hints: what to say to the student, how to correct errors, why each step is necessary, etc. The pages are for the tutor's use exclusively. The student will read the words and sentences printed on word cards, but the rest of the lesson is a grown-up, explicit and direct lesson plan for a tutor. Secondly, I tutor 4th, 5th, and 6th grade dyslexic students, as well as 2nd and 3rd graders. The older students feel put down by words and sentences which look like something a kindergartener or first grader would read. That is the main reason my materials are straightforward, without any frills or graphics that most elementary-age instructional materials have. While every O-G lesson is individualized and specific to a particular student, my products would be useful for any tutor beginning a tutoring relationship with a dyslexic or non-dyslexic student. I look forward to your feedback! I am always eager to make contact with fellow O-G tutors.
Warm, personable, funny, creative, multi-sensory, and always hands-on!
