I have been a teacher for 19 years. My initial certificate was to teach the general education population. I started off as a substitute teacher in Chicago Public Schools. I was a substitute teacher for several special education classrooms and decided to go back and get my degree in Special Education. l have been working at the same school for the past 17 years. For the first several years at the school, my classroom had only students with Autism. Currently, I have students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade with multiple disabilities.
My classroom is highly organized and structured to promote independence, communication, and socialization. An individualistic approach is used to manage the classroom in order to meet the specific needs of each of my students. It is a place for my students to learn where to be, what to do and how to do it. Visual supports are used throughout my classroom to promote appropriate classroom behavior, independent skills, communication skills, social skills and academic skills. I've used these supports in my classroom for years and I've watched my students (including the most challenging) understand and learn with them. Even my students who are non-verbal or have limited language can interact with the curriculum using these supports. The visual supports also provide the structure they need to understand classroom expectations.

I am a certified Learning Behavior Specialist with a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Development and a Masters Degree in General Administration.
I'm a visual learner so it helps me "see" how my students learn best.
