I have been teaching Family and Consumer Sciences for many years in Utah. After this many years, I have taught pretty much every subject area that falls under the FACS umbrella, but my love is in the Early Childhood Pathway courses. Here, I get to teach students how to impact and develop the future as they prepare to become teachers and caregivers, themselves, by participating in our on-site child care training center and education courses. For the last 5 years I have been on the curriculum writing board for the Early Childhood Education pathway courses. We have devised and updated the Utah state standards and objectives, performance objectives, and state skills tests for the 4 classes within the pathway. I wrote and piloted a high school CDA program for students to work on and achieve their CDA credential license while they are still in high school. I have presented numerous classes; from my child development program, to how to survive as a new teacher, to the magic of standing at your door before class begins and welcoming your students, at the annual Utah State FACS Educator Conference.
I believe that experience is necessary to learn effectively. We know that Infants learn best by engaging their senses, but so does everyone else. I want my students to experience what we are talking about and not just hear it or see it. For this reason, I design my lesson plans to meet this learning goal so that students are engaged from bell to bell and then leave having experienced and practiced the information within the walls of a safe educational environment before they have to try it on their own.
