I left my career in cancer research and became a teacher, liking the idea of having a captive audience to talk to about science. I promptly discovered that conducting dissections with a room full of teenagers made me feel the same way working with radioactive probes did in my previous career... twitchy. I caught on quickly that I'd have a better work/life balance teaching Maths and found my way to a Maths Department with a fantastic group of people where I to taught Maths to ICP classes of students with intellectual disabilities to coordinated an interschool Maths camps for high achievers. Creating science resources on TPT allows me to express my creativity and make the resources for other teachers that I couldn't find when I was teaching Science. Without the pressure to come up with something in limited time for the next class, I've been able to fall back in love with science. It is my hope that these resources save early career teachers time and energy that is better spent on selfcare and sleep.
Mostly explicit instruction with teacher-student interaction. Occasional groupwork, teacher demos, hands-on activities and experiments. I'm a fan of cognitive load theory, knowledge-rich curriculums, ResearchEd and Anita Archer. While by no means opposed to inquiry learning in all situations, I often end up using it because I have been held up at gun point. I have a firm conviction that teachers deserve to be able to teach and students deserve the opportunity to learn. I also believe that the main purpose of a school is and should be education.
