In my "previous life" as a full-time classroom teacher, I taught general music, choir, band, theatre, and technology education to students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Spanning both public and private education, my experience also includes significant work with high school marching bands, a brief period of offering private piano lessons, and the many hours it takes to plan dozens of performances a year!
Students learn by doing! What better medium than the performing arts for hands-on, experiential learning? I no longer have a classroom of my own, but I now enjoy providing meaningful resources to other educators that inspire a model of performance-based arts education. My research interests center on the intersection of arts education and community, so I am also passionate about the ways in which arts educators can connect the curriculum to students' lived experience!
Some of my favorite accomplishments as a teacher come from my time teaching at a small, private school. While there, I developed an extensive performance program and founded a series of collaborative ministries between the church, school, and community.
Currently a Ph.D. student in Education Policy Studies, I hold a Master of Education in Community Engagement, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Professional Certificate in Lyric Writing. Additionally, I am a Level 2 Google Certified Educator.
My resources for music and theatre classrooms particularly emphasize improving literacy across grade levels through standards-based assessment. I hope they are helpful to you!
