I have taught for 14 years in grades K-2 and 7 years as the Makerspace/Innovation specialist. I love teaching kids to read and find their inner strengths. I taught in a small rural school district for 10 years. I now teach in a fairly large district in the city. My new position is an specialist in a Makerspace/Innovation type setting. Design thinking and the engineering process is at the core of what we do along with keeping things accessible to students so they can continue their creativity when they're not in school.
My teaching style is detailed. I'm more of a facilitator and strive for students to be active participants in their learning journey rather than school be something that is done to them. If there is a problem or something doesn't work, I research, apply, try, then repeat. I am constantly reflecting on my practices and the purpose behind what I do. The way I teach is constantly changing and I don't tend to get stuck in one way of doing something. I try to incorporate play, partner work, and group work throughout each day. I want children to have fun at school and enjoy learning. I strive to incorporate those things in my units when possible.
I am honored to be the influence in the children's lives that I teach everyday! I was also very honored when the superintendent placed his child in my class. I was technology teacher of the YEAR 2020!
I have a M. ED with an emphasis in service-learning and social justice. I have embraced service-learning after I saw how connected the children in my class were after 2 years of research and a semester long project.
I use to create Folk-Art patterns for national magazines. I even had a company fly in from Japan to my house to do an article. I am able to take that creativity and knowledge and transfer it to creating teaching units. Behind the Scenes: I am married to my high school sweetheart. We have 3 children (boys). When I'm not teaching you can find us on the baseball field. My oldest was drafted by the MLB out of high school which was his and one of our proudest moments!
