I use this project as part of the addition and subtraction unit in my 3rd grade classroom. It gives students a real world scenario in which they would use their knowledge of addition and subtraction to manage money. The kids love it because it offers a lot of choice and is very fun! It could also be used for advanced 2nd graders or as a review at the beginning of the year for 4th graders.

Perimeter and Area Real World Task
This task asks students to pretend they have been hired by a home improvement company to solve two problems for them. The first job requires students to examine the relationship between perimeter and area to help "Mr. Baker" design his garden. Farming Simulation Math Project
I created this project to used with my 4th grade highly-gifted class. It incorporates multiplication, division, decimals, money management, and area into a complex and engaging simulation project. Students work with a group to purchase fields and seeds to plant each "year". They then roll the dice to determine what the weather will be like that year and how it will affect their crop growth. This product walks students through 7 different budgets and bills. This includes finding gross and net income and bill totals. It requires operations with decimals (the focus of this worksheet). The top says "no calculator" but file is in word, so that can be deleted. The 8th question on the sheet is a reflection question. It's a great real-world application of working with decimals.
