Main Idea; Literary Text; Modified for Special Ed

This worksheet is modified from the middle school reading curriculum. Students are asked to read the short paragraph and circle from a field of two which is the main idea. This enhances test-taking skills for students. For alternate ideas, have students use highlighters to highlight key words that help them identify the main idea. This is excellent for special education students who require an alternate or modified curriculum. It is also an excellent worksheet for general education students i

Narrative Planning Plot Chart

Created by

I created and printed this plot chart onto 11 by 17 paper for my class this year in order to help them plan their narrative stories before writing. It worked wonders! Each step on the plot chart has clear instructions for each part of the story. (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution) I let my students write notes of their plans all over these and their stories have stayed right on track once they began writing!

Classic Book Report for Intermediate and Middle School

Early finishers, gifted students and any child who needs to write about literature with a minimum of supervision and a maximum of personal thought about text will benefit from doing this report about a self selected book. The caveat,of course, is that the teacher *must* read the finished report and comment or the exercise will be less effective. This is the same report I used in home school for years. Because my daughters, now adult and one with a masters and one an M.D.,when asked what was

"To Build a Fire" by Jack London- "How To" Video Project

This video project corresponds to Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire." In this story, the protagonist believes he is an expert in wilderness exploration and able to successfully make his way through the treacherous Yukon in order to find gold. He ignores advice from more experienced explorers which ultimately ends in his death. Students will create an antithesis to this story by producing a video providing expert advice on a topic of their choosing. This packet includes: a description of

Romeo and Juliet Families

When trying to teach who belongs to which family in Romeo and Juliet, I found that students understand better when they have a graphic to look at. I created this to give students a "cheat sheet" to look at when trying to figure out who goes where. I gave students a list of characters and one person they were related to and turned it into a riddle. (I put that list on the board in random order.)

A line of nail polishes representing The Hunger Games was released earlier this month. It struck me that it might be fun for the students to create a nail polish line based on another set of star-crossed lovers: Romeo and Juliet. This activity would not only allow students to be creative, but to show their understanding of the events and characters in the story.
