These book club or library club permission slips are a great way to keep track of club membership. It is also a good way to protect yourself from any liability issues, so I recommend keeping the signed forms in a file drawer. This looks best in color, but black and white is just as effective.

A story writing packet for a unit on "The Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan. Students will write their own half-blood story with 16 pages of guidance on creating characters, locations, and event sequences. They will fill in a story map and edit their final work.

EDITABLE Interactive Notebook ELA resources
This Microsoft Publisher file includes tabs for different sections of the notebook (I printed them off on colored paper) and nametag covers for each student's notebook. We put together our notebooks on the first day of school. It's a fun project that will help them be organized in English class the rest of the year! Instructions: Glue or tape the ends of the tabs on 1 page about every 20 pages in a standard 100 page composition notebook. Glue or tape the nametag to the front.

One-Time-Use Hall Passes
Students in my class are given two passes per marking period. Each marking period's pass is a different color. Students must present one of these passes if they need to use their locker, go to the restroom, or get a drink. Once the student has used all of his or her passes for the marking period, he or she may not leave the classroom unless a generous student is willing to donate one of his or her own. You'd be surprised how infrequently they need to leave!

This is the first study guide I am offering for Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, which is an exciting story of survival in the Canadian wilderness.
