1.) Visual practice sheet - equal areas...
Students must realize that these two fractions are the SAME SIZE CIRCLES and GRIDS. That they are equivalent in shaded areas on each fraction.
I recommend to circle back and review every week for a month...quick review...reminder on equal areas...so there is sufficient repetition for students to ingrain a visual understanding of equivalent fractions.

Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators using Pancakes! 5.NF.2
This activity allows for students to use what they have learned in adding and multiplying fractions with unlike denominators and apply it to a real life situation. Students are completing operations to find the measurements of the ingredients so you can whip them up some pancakes when they are finished! I had a blast with my 5th graders doing this. Number lines - one step in difficulty from Level 3.
Number lines begin at whole numbers - not zero. Hence, the student can find improper fractions at any point by using a whole number location on the number line - and the student is off to the races.
If students are only given discrete mixed numbers, proper fractions, improper fractions and decimals, then they 'float' in isolation. These number lines connect the elements in an application setting.
