Common Core Writing Rubrics: 5th Grade
These three writing rubrics were staples in my 5th grade ELA classroom last year. We use these for each of our final pieces turned in for our portfolio. Each rubric is aligned to the common core writing standards for opinion, explanatory and narrative writing. Each rubric also includes a section for scoring L.5.2 (which applies to grammar and convention use within writing pieces).

This file contains an I can checklist for each ELA common core standard. It provides the learning goal (or the standard which is our long term goal). The learning goal is then broken up by bullets that contain short term goals for the students to attain in order to meet the long term goal. At the bottom of the rubric there is also a Marzano component that can be used to collect data and provide evidence as to mastery of the objective.

Leveled Spelling Activities
When I want to go more in-depth with improving spelling performance I have students take a pretest at the beginning of the week and then use the rubric to give themselves a level. From there they complete corresponding activities. They can always retest to change levels. The goal is getting them toward application (spelling the words correctly in their daily writing).
