Overview: This is a sample from my poetry unit for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in which students will analyze poems, determine the speaker of a poem and their point of view based on textual evidence, identify similes and metaphors and determine their meanings, make inferences based on text clues and background knowledge, and determine the theme/main idea of a poem based on textual evidence. This unit is based on nature walks to see trees on the school property or at a nearby park. Students will observe, draw, journal, and collect samples that they will later sort, categorize, identify and draw. They will later create a mixed media artwork and found poem about trees.

Introduction to Poetry
This is a 12 page poetry unit. It is an easy introduction to rhyme, verse and syllables. I used this unit with grade three students and they loved the freedom to create and share their poems. The unit includes rhyming couplets, haiku, cinquains, alliterations and many more. Some forms of poetry may be challenging for some children in your class but exposing them and accepting their efforts is the first step. You could compile this into a booklet or choose the pages that work for you.

This is an assessment that is formatted like the STAAR Assessment. It is a multiple choice assessment. It is based on a genre based unit that covers fact and opinion briefly, along with TEKS 5.12. as I needed to lengthen my units into 2 weeks. I had the students keep these in their notebooks so they could always be aware of where and what to do on that day. After the first 2 weeks, this was so routine students really loved knowing what they would be doing each day.

Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt
Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.
Poetry Analysis Jigsaw
Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.
Poetry Slam or Performance
Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.
Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives
Ask students to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object or an animal to foster empathy and encourage creative, out-of-the-box thinking.
Creating Found Poetry
Provide magazines, newspapers, or online articles. Have students cut out interesting words and phrases, and use them to create their own unique poems.
