Description
This is newly updated as a digital PDF for home or distance learning! This fun and engaging 3-4 days set of science lessons is useful for introducing ELEMENTS and the periodic table to students in upper elementary or middle school. Students learn what elements are and their connection to atoms, the symbols/abbreviations of 20 elements by making “Tricky Flash Cards”, and research basic facts about each element in a Scavenger Hunt. It can be used to teach and assess student content knowledge as you work towards meeting the NGSS PS1 Performance Expectations or Texas TEKS 6.5A Know that an element is a pure substance represented by a chemical symbol and that a compound is a pure substance represented by a chemical formula in your matter/chemistry unit. Because of copyright laws, this is not an editable document, so be sure to see below for the 20 elements included in the lesson.
If using as a distance learning resource, simply print and assign or attach to Google Classroom (or whatever platform you use!) Check out the other home/distance learning products in my store! Home and Distance Learning Resources
Why are these concepts important? Why should students learn basic elements and their symbols? When scientists read chemical formulas of substances/compounds (MS-PS1-1) such as water, which is H2O, it is very important that they know what elements this molecule and others makes up – Hydrogen and Oxygen.
Lessons Overview.
On Day One, students:
- Discuss the question: If everything is made of atoms, how is it that everything looks and behaves differently? Could they be different than one another?
- View and discuss a colorful, basic image of the Periodic Table of Elements (black and white prints fine)
- Watch two short, fun video clips of elements (links provided)
- Match 20 common elements with their symbols in “Element Soup” analogy and revise
On Day Two, students:
- Are instructed to make “Tricky Flash Cards” with 20 common elements and symbols they need to know to understand how to read formulas/molecules/compounds
- Are provided with several examples of “tricks” such as: Silver = Ag. The trick is aging people have silver hair!
On Days Three-Four, students:
- Investigate the 20 elements in a Scavenger Hunt using the Internet (or other resources at your discretion) to write facts/properties about each
Included in this resource:
- Student Worksheets with examples
- Links to videos
- Lesson Overview
- Answer Keys
- Rubric for grading “Tricky Flash Cards”
The elements included in the lesson: Helium, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Aluminum, Sulfur, Chlorine, Sodium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Copper, Iron, Silver, Nickel, Gold, Mercury, Potassium, Silicon, Lead, Hydrogen
*Note: This resource does not go into molecules or compounds. It is an introduction to elements only. See below for Molecules and Compounds Resources!
