I have been teaching in Hawai'i for eleven years but have been involved with education and schools for thirteen years here. I was awarded the 2020 Hawai'i History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. I have taught regular and AP US History, World History, Civics, Hawaiian History, and AP Human Geography. I also teach E-school classes on the side.
My strength is definitely in my passion for teaching and the energy I bring to my lessons. However, I believe firmly in learning through doing and that the classroom should be student-centered and that 'the students should be working harder than the teacher.' With the right materials and activities, students are intrinsically motivated to work through challenging material and will enjoy the process. I try to create lessons that allow for struggled exploration!
State History Teacher of the Year for Hawaii 2020 by Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. National Board Certified Teacher. I am an AVID teacher and incorporate AVID strategies in all my classes. I took a semester sabbatical and traveled all over the country visiting, observing, and collaborating with over a hundred teachers at sixty schools including award-winning teachers, top-performing, under-performing, and alternative school environments.
I graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo with a degree in Political Science and a post-Bachelor degree in Secondary Education. I took a cross country sabbatical in 2017 visiting teachers and schools all over the country to learn from the best in all educational settings; public, private, inner-city and rural, outdoor environmental schools, special ed, charter and magnate, with top and struggling teachers.
