This paper lab uses an organizer to help students understand the differences between polar bonds, polar molecules, and nonpolar molecules. To achieve this, students draw various models of several carefully chosen compounds. My class is fortunate enough to have MolyMods, so that is included in the lab as well. If you don't have them, you can substitute with another model type, gumdrops and toothpicks, or you can omit that section. My labs are straightforward. Some of them are paper labs, but the

Soda & Mentos Geyser - video and written lesson plan for the whole class

Putting Mentos candy into a bottle of diet cola creates an amazing liquid geyser. The carbon dioxide bubbles in the soda attach themselves to thousands of tiny surface pits in the Mentos candy. The bubbles become numerous, creating gas and rapidly pushing the liquid out of the bottle. The effect is intensified because the heavy Mentos candies sink in the bottle, increasing the number of bubbles produced.PreK through 4th gradeThis fun video models the lesson, describes the project, the S.T.E.A.M.
