Mentorship Service Learning Project – High School – Experiential Learning – CCSS

A self-directed project based learning unit for high school students, “A Mentored Service Learning Project” is designed as a marking-period long educational experience. This project tasks students with finding and working with a mentor to design and complete a service project (outside of class), while practicing research skills, formal essay writing, and public speaking (during class). Broken down into 6 engaging and scaffolded tasks (tied to 11 Common Core ELA standards), students get to engage their own interests in the service of others while simultaneously demonstrating their mastery of your English curriculum.

Designed to engage learners for an entire 9-week marking period, this product includes:

• A presentation that introduces all 6 project tasks to your students and assists with the brainstorming of potential projects (with example photos)
• "The Basics of MLA Style" presentation
• TASK 1: A writing an essential question and mentor selection activity that includes directions and examples for essential question and mentor letter writing, with a Common Core aligned rubric (ELA Standard: CCRA.W.4) - See PREVIEW
• TASK 2: A writing a project proposal activity that includes proposal outline directions and an example, with a Common Core aligned rubric (ELA Standards: CCRA.W.4 and CCRA.SL.1) - See PREVIEW
• TASK 3: An annotated bibliography writing assignment that includes bibliography requirements, a list of helpful resources, an example, and Common Core aligned rubric (ELA Standards: CCRA.W.7, CCRA.W.8, CCRA.L.3) - See PREVIEW
• TASK 4: A project binder assignment that includes requirements for 3 binder checks, with accompanying documents (Liability Release Form, Time Logs, Mentor Survey, and Reflections Writing Requirements) and a scaffolded rubric - See PREVIEW
