Both men wanted the same outcome: Respect, dignity, and equality for African Americans. However, they disagreed on how to achieve that and how it would look. Here students analyze 8 quotes from these two influential men, about 4 different topics: Race relations, education, economics, and violence. Students compare the different philosophies and arrive at a better understanding of each leader's ideas, in particular those of Malcolm X, who they often erroneously assume was far more militant and vi

A Pirate's Life DBQ

Let's face it - pirates are cool and fun! With recent popular culture, though, it gets harder to separate the fact from the fiction. In this DBQ young teens are challenged to read primary sources and draw their own conclusions about what a pirate (or privateer!) may have faced in their life, compared to the everyday colonial-era person. We explore the definitions of pirate, privateer and buccaneer, where they hung out, and why the life - although dangerous! - was lucrative and free. (I notice

All of the questions students will be able to answer without the colors on the graphs.

This activity is based on the biography: "From Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad" by: Ann Petry. I teach ELAR, and we read this text during our "Fight for Freedom" unit in the HMH textbook. I wanted to make something non-traditional versus the usual boring worksheet. To print you'd need to use size 8 x 14 paper. My students really enjoyed doing it and the aesthetic of it! *Updated*- I read your comments and added an answer key. Enjoy!

New England Slavery DBQ

What was slavery like in the Colonial North? This is a big research question. To start the discussion is to dispel old stereotypes about a free North, opposed to a slave-ridden South before the Civil War. Colonial America is seen as a patch-work of slavery practices. Students examine primary sources and draw their own conclusions to see what sort of slave life existed in New England. Background information gives some context for each document. I include a glossary of some of the tougher terms.
