Properties of Water Inquiry Lab: Find the Antidote to a Wasp Sting - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, this lab requires students to discover the antidote to a venomous hornet sting. Students must work cooperatively under a time constraint in order to discover which of two liquids are the antidote. They design, and carry out, four mini-experiments using household materials, and their knowledge of the properties of water, in order to ascertain the antidote. They must justify their claim for which liquid is the antidote using evidence from thei

For years I struggled with teaching IMF's because I didn't have a concrete lab to show the students the macroscopic effect of stronger intermolecular forces. I developed this lab to show this. The preview shows you one of the 4 different macroscopic properties that are analyzed in this lab. Each property has a small lab that the students can perform to collect data. There is data table for them to complete, as well as analysis questions which allow students to make connections from the macro

This lab demonstrates both the specificity and denaturation of the lactase enzyme. This is a true kitchen-chemistry lab- the only required materials are skim milk, lactase tablets (from the pharmacy aisle), and glucose test strips. The lab is fully editable. To simplify the lab or to shorten it for just one class period, I suggest removing "Part 2". A pre-lab worksheet, teacher preparation notes, expected results, and possible modification/extension are included.

This lab is completed with simple materials -- the only supplies you need are beaker, vinegar, baking soda, steel wool, and a thermometer. Students will complete a lab objective and review some vocabulary. Then, they will make a prediction, test their prediction with a short experiment, write data and conclude whether the reaction is endothermic or exothermic. Two reactions will be performed. This is a classic lab that is both student-friendly and teacher-friendly.
