Quadrilateral Kite Experiment Project Congruent Angles & Perpendicular Bisectors

Created by
Absolute Value
The purpose of the Quadrilateral Kite Experiment is to allow students to explore the characteristics of a quadratic kite and use those properties for flight. Students will construct a kite using wooden dowels, a plastic bag, and some string. They will conduct an experimental flight, recording their data and results. Students will then reflect on their results and the qualities of a quadratic kite that make it the choice shape for flight. They will then examine the results of others. Students wi

Fireworks: Trigonometry Inquiry Project

Created by
Mitchell Zuvela
In this inquiry-based project, students will learn how to use basic trigonometric functions such as cosine, tangent and sine to find the missing side distances and angles of a right-angle triangle.Students will explore how fireworks of varying heights will affect the viewing angle and line of sight for the viewing audience.Students will design their own fireworks show that will include 4 different colours of fireworks. Each firework choice has a differing explosion height, which will slightly ch

In a project combining high school geometry with creative design and art, students will discover connections between: Pythagorean Theorem, Special Right Triangles, Right Triangle Trigonometry, patterns, and design. This highly engaging project includes both a Pythagorean spiral creation and also requires students to show supporting math calculations to find hypotenuse lengths and central angle measures (SOH CAH TOA). This is always a favorite project of my students year after year!!A student s

I like to call this activity Putt-Putt-Geometry. It is 9 glorious holes of trigonometry application! This works great as a Trig unit project, end of year project, or test review (maybe 1 or 2 holes for review). The students can work in groups, pairs, or individuals. If your students are not proficient with Trig, or you have not covered it yet, each hole can be done using the Pythagorean Theorem instead - simply tweak the directions a bit. I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do!

Project and Rubric - Real World Math (The Pythagorean Theorem)

"In math class, you have learned about the Pythagorean Theorem. You have also seen examples of how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in ‘real life.’ For this task you will create your own “real life” Pythagorean Theorem word problem and model using the following steps..." Students will create and solve their own word problem, construct a 3D model of their scenario, and then write a reflection on their process and experience. *Rubric is included. *This project was created in collaboration with c

Here is a chance to purchase my entire set of 62 geometry lessons!!! They are fully differentiated and ideal for a diverse classroom where students range from 2nd grade to 11th grade in their math levels. They also can work equally well VIRTUALLY and come in the form of Google Slides!!! These are 90 minute lessons, so if you factor in time for social-emotional days, review days, make-up days, and inevitable testing days this full set can take you through the entirety of a school year!! This is one of my favorite projects of all time. Students make a tool to measure the angle of elevation from their eyeline and use it to measure the distance or height of things using trigonometry. I would bring students to the banks of the East River on the Brooklyn side and determine the height of the Chrystler building, or the distance to the Empire State. But you can also determine the height of the basketball hoop, the flagpole or the tallest tree on the school grounds. There are a lot

Students will work individually or in groups to write their own angle of elevation/depression work problems. This can be used as an in class activity or assessment after right triangle trig word problems. I usually create a Google Slide deck for each class and then have them solve each other's problems as review!

Angle of Elevation Activity

This is an activity for teachers looking to do a real life activity on angles of elevation or angles of depression. Students learn how to use clinometers and calculate the height of something tall using trigonometry. There is also an extension for teachers to use introducing statistics and box and whisker plots (by hand and using a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator). Comes with teachers instructions and student packet. PDF and Word document are included in the zip file.

This project is an ideal group Christmas activity that beautifully blends individual effort with collaborative execution through tessellations. It introduces ten pages of an innovative resource tailored for children and adolescents. These pages include two primary ones, each showcasing three uniquely patterned triangles , amounting to six triangles altogether. Complementing these are eight additional pages that function as exemplary models, demonstrating the assembly process of these triangles

The eighth grade science classes are in the middle of their “Rocket Project”. Students design and build water bottle rockets out of two liter and one liter soda bottles. This final project ties in benchmarks from Science and Technology, Scientific Inquiry, Scientific Ways of Knowing, Physical Sciences, and Earth and Space Sciences. Using basic trigonometry and acceleration due to gravity, students are able to calculate their rocket’s highest altitude while having a goal of maximizing the rocke

Sunrise / Sunset -- Trigonometry Project

This project needs to be assigned / completed before you teach them how to graph the sine and cosine functions. It can be used for everyone, even middle school students (though they wouldn’t be doing it for the sine / cosine aspect). Maybe I’m “old-school”, but I like to have my students do the first part of this project without any access to the Internet. The second part of the project requires them to research, so I would allow them to do that online. This project is free and will alway

You will use a standard water balloon launcher to calculate the maximum height a balloon went after being launch as well as the velocity of the balloon. There are two parts to the lab. Part 1 involves collecting data and building a graph. Part 2 is calculating velocity and maximum height. ENJOY!!

This is a fabulous activity for teaching similar triangles and trigonometry to a geometry class! As you can see in the thumbnails, I take my students outside for this activity and it is a lot of fun.Duration: 1-3 hours, depending on the group. My honors geometry classes have completed the task in ~100-120 minutes. Here's how the activity works:1. Learn about the clinometer (I show a brief youtube video) and build your own.2. Leave the classroom, head outside or around the school (gym, auditorium,

The Two Day Soccer Math Project is exactly like it sounds. It was designed for an advanced middle school or early high school student (preferably a soccer fan) to complete in about two days and it contains quite a bit of rigor for something that the student will think is a fun change of pace. It's not a project that requires any pre-planning or supplies. It's just a great project that is a bit all-encompassing as far as math skills are concerned. They will use estimation skills, percents, measur
