Project Based Learning: Volume and Area of Prisms and Cylinders

This cooperative project involves applying many math and language skills to a real life situation. Teams are tasked with planning an aquatic center. Specifications include rectangular and circular pools which allow students to practice older skills such as perimeter, area, and volume of rectangles and prisms, as well as newer skills such as circumference, area, and volume of circles and cylinders. Measurement conversions are integrated, as well as writing and presentation skills. A final po

Miss A Plus
This trading simulation game was developed during my practicum as part of a unit on Canada's trading partners but can be easily adapted for History and Social Studies lessons in other countries, as well as exploring ancient civilizations. The focus of the game is to instill an understanding of the uneven distribution of global resources, and is intended to be played with lots of time for a (guaranteed passionate!) discussion period afterwards. This game was modeled for the Ontario Curriculum (gr

Geometry:Concurrent Points GeoGebra Activity - Circumcenter & Incenter -w/ Key

Tired of teaching the same boring lessons on Circumcenter and Incenter? After years of using the standard book resources, I decided to create this activity that demonstrates some real-life applications of these concurrent points. This product includes 9 tasks (with complete answer key and screen shots of graphics). Each task will ask students to find a real life circumcenter or incenter. (While this product did not include any centroid or orthocenter problems, I left those options on the top

This PowerPoint presentation uses animations to demontrate 3 types of tranformations: translations, rotations, and reflections. Students can actively create their own transformational shape that can then be translated, rotated, or reflected to build a tessellation. Turn Geometry into a fun art project where students can add color to their tessellation to create an image out of te transformed shape. Common Core, Geometry, transformations, translations, rotations, reflections

STEM UNIT: Becoming an architect may seem so wonderful, but students may think twice after designing, building, and repairing problems in their new home. This is a unit that allows students to use a combination of math skills and critical thinking to be the architect of their own dream home on a budget. The students will engage in researching architecture of homes and house plans, designing their house plan, purchasing materials and labor, and dealing with problems along the way. The skills used

The Mine Maze game combines movement with Vectors (magnitude & direction) with the Unit Circle directions. Students will navigate themselves through a maze of hidden mines while using vectors. The first to traverse the entire board wins! WORKS BEST IF YOU MAKE A BOARD OUT OF TAPE ON THE FLOOR! Directions to the game are included, as well as an audio clip that explains the instructions and gameplay. Feeling creative? This game is very flexible, and allows for use at many different grade level

Incorporate technology in your class and let GeoGebra be your key partner in the learning process. This applet uses a virtual straightedge (in centimeters and inches), a virtual protractor and virtual pairs of compasses to simulate some basic geometric constructions that students are required to do on the paper. I tried to make the tools as realistic as possible (especially the protractor and the straightedge). The straightedge draws up to 4 segments, the protractor draws up to 3 angles and ther

This power point presentation shows students how to construct thriangles using Pencil, Ruler, Protractor or compasses. Step by step instructions are given for staff below each slide and my students tend to follow the instructions easily keeping up with sir. I then have them write into their books in their own words how they would construct the said triangle. This power point is three of my lessons put on one slideshow. Hence I would treat it as three lessons.

A project for any student who has learned triangle trigonometry. Students design an A frame house to certain specifications and within a certain budget. Costs for various aspects of the home are given. Students must calculate floor space, framing, roofing, foundation size, etc. This project makes a good multiple day homework assignment. It is recommended that the teacher go over problems in class that relate to the specific tasks needed to complete this project. The project could be done by

This hands on activity is student centered and student led and allows the students to investigate and discover volume of rectangular prisms. For this activity, the students can use snap cubes to complete the project. There is a hint on the bottom of the project to help the students complete it. For this project, the teacher is just there to facilitate and give leading questions. The students can work in teams and arrive at the correct answer in many ways.

I developed this unit as an enrichment activity for the students that showed themselves as proficient in the standards and did not need to review before the state test at the end of the year. The students plan, design, redesign, and build the floor plan of a house to scale while proving that they met strict requirements. The advanced students said that they were challenged but that they had a lot of fun! This can be done in groups or each student can build their own house!

Social Issue Project: Dangerous Dolls?

During this project, students will measure themselves, measure action figures/dolls, and scale up the doll proportionally to life size, based on their height. Then, they will trace themselves on a large piece of butcher block paper. On that same paper, they will sketch out the life-sized doll proportions and create a body outline of what the doll would look like if it were their same height. They should finish with something that looks terribly disproportionate. From there, you can have a debate

This interactive Geogebra file allows you to use a slider to choose the number of sides on the regular polygon from 3-12 sides. Then it allows you to manipulate side length using a slider. Lastly, you can use a slider to "unfold" the regular polygon into triangles to make a connection between triangle area formula and the regular polygon formula.

FOLLOW ME ON TPT! This resource provides a guide for students to discover the ratio between circumference and diameter. The students will measure the circumference and diameter of various circles with a piece of string, then create a ratio and convert to decimal. I ask the students to bring in a circle from home previous to this lesson so that there are a variety of sizes for the students to practice on. I use it as an exploratory lesson before I introduce pi so that the students can disco
