This year, for our state standardized test (we're not a Common Core State), our students will have "technology enhanced items", which means they will have to manipulate items within the question to get the right answer. There may be more than one answer blank. One of the most common graphic organizers that we should see on the new test is the Venn Diagram.

Say It In Six SmartNotebook file
The Say It in Six activity allows students to focus on the key story elements when summarizing a story. While students are reading, I have them make a list of important words. Then, after reading, students are to select the six words that best summarize the entire story. Each word is written in one of the boxes and they use it to retell the story to the class, and/or write a summary. I have also had the students work in groups, and as a group they need to come up with six words they all agree on

Field Trip Report Anchor Chart & Independent work
This is an activity to work on retell after a field trip. You could use this for other activities also. IT is a smart notebook file where you can interactively show the anchor chart for first, next and last. This will help to model and introduce. We will do it to support how we have been working on retell for stories by making a connection to real life through reflecting on our field trip.

Centers/Stations Template
This is a very handy organizer and visual to use when doing centers in your classroom. I got the idea from my mentoring teacher and brought it to my classroom last year. Since ELA is such a complex class and often concentrated to fit the 90 minute time frame, I break my centers up into 3 days. That allows the students to get more time in each center. I spend the last 30 minutes of class doing 2 rounds of 15 minutes, but you can set the timer as you please.
